Interschool Chess Tournament
During the BGSB Rugby and Football Tour of Australia and New Zealand, staff and pupils met with Old Boy, Tony Booth (1956), in Auckland when he came to watch the boys play. Mr Booth, a footballer for BGS in the 50s was very impressed by the boys' performance.
Tony, also a keen chess player, expressed a wish to sponsor a competition and on returning to school in September Mr Max Ahmad organised the BGSB Interschool Chess Tournament which is to become an annual event.
In early spring, the competition to find the most outstanding player was open to the whole school. Twenty boys of varying ages were bold enough for the challenge, which was run on a knockout basis over several weeks.
The final lived up to expectations and with very few pieces left on the board the ‘Tony Booth Chess Trophy' was presented to school champion James Tsim (U6SI).
