THE OLD CLAVIANS' GOLFING SOCIETY - SUMMARY OF 2011

The Golf year commenced in May 2011 with The Challenge Trophy being played at Harwood Golf Club. The Winner was Dave Freeman with Melvyn Ince the runner-up.

In July Invitation Day was held at Nelson Golf Club in superb weather. Thirty four players took part. Winners were Melvyn Ince and Stuart Clegg. Runners up were Ray Swinnerton and Paul Sillett.

Captains Day was held at Chorley Golf Club and the popularity of Glyn Evans (or was it his comic talents) drew a large turnout. Winner was Melvyn Ince and runner up was Mike Sherlock.

The annual challenge match against The School v The Old Boys was held at Bury Golf Club in atrocious weather in September. The match was drawn and The Old Boys therefore retain the trophy. Individual winners were: T.Nicholson for The Old Boys and George Owen for The School.

A disappointing aspect of the 2011 season was not playing the Silver Swan Challenge. There were several reasons for this but The Old Boys are convinced that it is a tactical move on the part of The Old Girls. Come on ladies - choose a venue, a date and time and throw down the challenge for 2012 - we are getting fed up of cleaning the trophy!!!

Our season ended on a high note with a Three-Day Golf Break at Portals Hotel and Spa near Tarporley. Good weather was enjoyed on all 3 days and the competition was fierce but friendly. Overall champion was Peter Kenyon who had travelled all the way from Aberdeen to be with us. Most popular winner by far however was Howard Manwaring who won ‘Nearest The Pin' on the final day - because of media interest and to avoid being mobbed by his fan base it is rumoured he was forced to spend several days in a hideaway in Wales before he could safely return home!

Another good year enjoyed by all we look forward to the 2012 season.

Melvyn Ince, Hon.Secretary
