Well-travelled Ena saw changing world
THE funeral of a well-travelled former teacher - one of the borough's oldest residents - will take place today.
Ena Lord died peacefully at the Alexandra Nursing Home in Rochdale Road, Bury, on April 10 aged 104.
A daughter of a former mayor and a member of a family with a proud industrial heritage, today's ceremony at 11am, at Bury Parish Church, is set to be well attended. Her great-niece, Mandy Adamson, aged 50, of Clitheroe, described Miss Lord as a remarkable person who led a fascinating life.
She explained: "Ena lived through two world wars and saw a great many changes to life in general and Bury in particular. The layout of the town changed a lot in her lifetime. She saw how it changed when the shopping precinct was built and the small streets gave way for wider, longer ones."
Miss Lord was born at Park View in 1905 and was the youngest child of John and Sarah Lord. Her father founded chemical engineering company John L Lord and Son in 1901. John was a politician and served as Bury mayor in 1931. He died in 1956. Miss Lord's brother, Samuel, was an Alderman on Bury Council in 1938. Samuel had a son called Barry, who had two children, Stephen and Mandy. Stephen, who is Miss Lord's great nephew, runs John Lord and Sons today.
Miss Lord began her formal education at St Stephen's Primary School in Colville Drive, Bury, before going on to Bury Grammar School. She then moved to study history at Froebel College in Bedford.
Her teaching career started in 1927 in Darlington. That was followed by positions in Keighley in Yorkshire, at Bolton School and at Bury Grammar School. Miss Lord retired in 1956 and used her free time to travel, visiting Hong Kong and Portugal among other destinations.
At 97, she moved from her home in Ainsworth Road, Bury, to Alexandra Nursing Home.
